Price forced out of Warriors team
A throat injury has forced Warriors skipper Steve Price forced out Sunday's NRL home match against South Sydney, the latest addition to a long list of unavailable players.
Price was forced to withdraw after seeing a specialist about an accidental knock he received to the throat while making a tackle during the 26-24 win over Manly two rounds ago.
The 35-year-old prop took the field in the heavy loss to Brisbane last Saturday night, but has been advised to sit out against the Rabbitohs.
Club doctor John Mayhew said a scan showed that Price had a haematoma to his throat and the area was still swollen.
"He needs to rest this week to allow the swelling to ease," Mayhew said.
Price's injury would be reviewed next week before a decision was made on whether he should make the trip to Newcastle.
Price became the ninth Warrior to be unavailable for the encounter with the Rabbitohs.
Also out with injury are centre Brent Tate (knee), wing Manu Vatuvei (knee), utility Lance Hohaia (knee), second rower Ben Matulino (ankle), and props Leeson Ah Mau (shoulder), Mataupu Poching (ankle) and Evarn Tuimavave (neck).
Second rower Epalahame Lauaki's signing for Hull prevented his participation in the match.
Tate's season is over after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament against former club Brisbane.
Tuimavave is out indefinitely, but Vatuvei, Hohaia, Matulino and Poching, who is yet to make his NRL debut, are all expected to be available for selection soon, possibly against Newcastle.
Coach Ivan Cleary said the number of injuries had put a big dent in the club's resources.
However, there was nothing to be done but back others to step in and do the job, he said.
"While we've lost two of our most experienced players this week in Brent and Steve, we have boys in our squad who are busting themselves for an opportunity and now they have it."
With Price sidelined, Sam Rapira and Russell Packer have been named as the starting props.
New recruit Lewis Brown and former Junior Warrior skipper Daniel O'Regan have been added to a five-man bench, putting both in line for their first-grade debuts.
Christchurch-born Brown, a hooker/back rower signed from Wests Tigers, and O'Regan, a loose forward/five-eighth, have been playing for the Auckland Vulcans in the New South Wales Cup.
New Zealand Warriors: Wade McKinnon, Denan Kemp, Patrick Ah Van, Jerome Ropati, Aidan Kirk, Joel Moon, Stacey Jones, Sam Rapira, Ian Henderson, Russell Packer, Simon Mannering, Jacob Lillyman, Micheal Luck. Interchange - (one to be omitted) Lewis Brown, Nathan Fien, Daniel O'Regan, Jesse Royal, Ukuma Ta'ai.
