Maroons to name team of the century
Will Darren Lockyer's mid-career move to five-eighth cost him his place in Queensland's team of the century?
And did Allan Langer, who many feared was too small for Origin when plucked from Ipswich to play for Queensland alongside Wally Lewis in the 1980s, do enough to beat rugged halfback Barry Muir into the elite team?
Those debates and more will be settled in some way on Tuesday night when Queensland reveal its team of the century at a black tie dinner in Brisbane for more than 1700 guests.
Lewis, Mal Meninga and Arthur Beetson - named in Australia's team of the century earlier this year - are certainties to be included in Queensland's team of the century.
But Lockyer and others, like second-rower Gorden Tallis, hooker Steve Walters and centre Steve Renouf will all face stern opposition to make the side named to celebrate rugby league's 100 year celebrations.
Eric Frauenfelder, former Balmain great Jimmy Craig who played in the early 1900s and more recently Gary Belcher, all have legitimate claims to the No.1 jumper which Lockyer is favoured to claim.
"We've put up three players for every position," said Queensland Rugby League managing director Ross Livermore.
"We're naming 17 players plus a coach over 100 years of rugby league.
"There's been some great players in that period so those that make it are dead set top of their class because a lot of good players will miss out."
The timing of the announcement of Queensland's team of the century on State of Origin eve should help further fire up the Maroons who must beat NSW on Wednesday night to keep the interstate series alive.
