Lockyer wins player of the year prize
Kangaroos skipper Darren Lockyer has been named Australia's international player of the year.
Lockyer added the Harry Sunderland Medal to his World Cup grand final man of the match honour ahead of teammate Billy Slater, despite the Melbourne fullback being named player of the tournament.
The 31-year-old joins previous winners of the medal as Team of the Century members John Raper, Ron Coote and Wally Lewis.
"Darren's World Cup performances showed us why he is still considered one of the very best players in the game today and he is a deserved winner of this year's medal," ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said on Wednesday.
