Steve Price poised to stalk NSW No.7
NSW halfback Peter Wallace knows Queensland have put a big Price on shutting his kicking game down - his name is Steve and he weighs about 107kg.
Wallace controlled NSW's opening State of Origin win with a superb tactical kicking game on debut that was finely tuned under the expert tutelage of halfback of the century Andrew Johns.
But Wallace knows his kicking will receive more pressure at Suncorp Stadium on Wednesday simply because the finest chargedown exponent in the NRL, Maroons prop Steve Price, is back after missing Origin I with a hamstring injury.
Price is renowned for his intense kick pressure but was widely criticised for diving at the legs of Brett Kimmorley in Origin III last year that resulted in a severe knee injury to the NSW halfback.
Wallace said assistant coach Johns had made a deliberate point of discussing ways to negate Price's harassing tactics next week knowing the pressure on his kicking game will be more intense.
"That is sort of his trademark, he gets out and puts pressure on kickers a bit," said Wallace.
"I definitely have to keep my eye on him around about the fourth or fifth tackle and just concentrate on what I'm doing a little bit more.
"(Johns said) just to keep an eye on him, make sure that you're looking up to see where he is and make sure you have plenty of time."
But aside from preparing to combat Price, Wallace is treating the countdown to just his second Origin appearance as calmly as his debut.
He said dealing with the Origin build-up was easier than last time simply because he knows what to expect, although he is aware the pressure is higher to maintain the standard he set in game one.
"I know you can't rest on one game," he said.
"You need to perform over the whole series.
"There was a bit of pressure in the first game and there's going to be some heading back (up to Brisbane)."
Some pressure is an understatement. The Cauldron atmosphere of Suncorp Stadium has the potential to swallow even the most unflappable footballers but 22-year-old Wallace has several factors in his favour.
The most obvious is the three games he's won at the ground with Brisbane since joining the Broncos this year.
The other factor in his favour is that he's performed before when he's played for the enemy. In round three last year Wallace booted a 42m field goal deep in extra time for Penrith to sink the Broncos.
"That was a long time ago, that was my first experience there and it was a great experience and a pretty good ending to the game," he recalled.
NSW were boosted on Friday with confirmation Test centre Mark Gasnier, who starred in Origin I, had fully overcome his hamstring strain and could re-join full training with his teammates.
Coach Craig Bellamy then decided to hand Melbourne winger Steve Turner his Origin debut on the wing in place of suspended Jarryd Hayne, sending Canberra's Joel Monaghan home after being in camp all week as cover for Gasnier.
"I'm definitely 100 per cent and probably a bit earlier than I thought which is good as it gives me a few extra days up my sleeve to prepare with the team and that's the big bonus," said Gasnier who was surprised with his nine-day recovery.
"(Physiotherapist) Tony Ayoub has been treating me morning and night in camp which is really good ... maybe I'm just lucky."
