Wallace in doubt for Origin decider
NSW halfback Peter Wallace is in serious doubt for State of Origin's July 2 decider after undergoing groin surgery on Thursday night.
Wallace has been ruled out of least one NRL match after the minor surgery, scratched from Brisbane's team to play Canberra in the national capital on Sunday.
The 22-year-old playmaker sustained the injury from an accidental kick to the groin early in Wednesday night's 30-0 loss to Queensland.
He played on in pain until limping off with 10 minutes left when the Maroons had the match wrapped up.
The surgery was deemed a success but the Broncos say they won't know Wallace's period of rehabilitation until next week.
"We will not know when he can get back on the training or playing field until after the weekend," said Brisbane's performance director Jeremy Hickmans.
"The operation went well and he is out of hospital today. It will just be a matter of assessing him next week to see when he can resume running."
Wallace was a star for the Blues in his Origin debut on May 21 in their 18-10 opening match victory in Sydney but struggled in the return game on Wednesday night.
He wasn't helped by the injury but the NSW forwards failed to give him the attacking platform they supplied in the opener.
The Penrith product was still expected to be selected in the Blues squad for the ANZ Stadium decider, with most pressure coming from Newcastle's Kurt Gidley who came off the bench in game two.
The Broncos are optimistic Wallace will be available to return against the Wests Tigers at Suncorp Stadium next Friday night.
If he fails to back up in time, Wallace's position will rest on the faith of the selectors with NSW team named the following Tuesday.
Canberra halfback Todd Carney, the Roosters' Mitchell Pearce, Parramatta's Brett Finch and Manly's Matt Orford all come further into contention with Wallace on the sidelines.
Wallace has been replaced by 2006 premiership-winning halfback Shane Perry for the Broncos' clash with the Raiders.
Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett will finalise his team at training on Saturday morning.
