Dragons move Chase Stanley back to wing
Kiwi sensation Chase Stanley is a winger again with St George Illawarra coach Nathan Brown shelving plans to turn the teenage prodigy into a backrower.
Stanley burst onto the scene as a robust winger last season, his 18-game rookie campaign so impressive it earned him a New Zealand Test call-up where the youngster was forced to juggle international football with completing his higher school certificate.
Looking to gain more impact from his young charge in 2008, Brown moved him into the pack, though the change garnered mixed results over the opening four rounds with Stanley appearing lost at times as he struggled to leave his mark.
Brown has admitted Stanley foreseeable future was in the backs.
"He is a natural centre, outside back more so than he is a backrower," Brown said.
"But when you've got Coops (Matt Cooper) and Gaz (Mark Gasnier) both fit, you want to try and find a spot for Chase because he's a good natural football player.
"It's more about trying to find a position for Chase more than anything."
Now that he's back on the wing, and playing outside Test ace Gasnier, Stanley's sure to get plenty of opportunities to add to his six tries from last season.
He also gives the Dragons a great weapon on kick returns, Stanley's 188cm, 100kg frame sure to take a power of stopping when in full flight.
The quietly spoken 18-year-old said he was glad to still be in the mix following the Dragons' 1-3 start to the season.
"I'm just happy to be in the team, it's not going to change much the way I play," Stanley said.
"It's good playing outside Gaz, he creates opportunities for his wingers and it's going to be fun. You've just got to be ready for anything."
For Gasnier it's his third winger in five matches, after first Brett and then Josh Morris were given a crack over the opening four rounds.
The Dragons skipper was hopeful Stanley would rediscover some of his rookie form in the wider spaces.
"Chase is a bit more comfortable out there .. I'm sure he'll be excited to get back there," Gasnier said.
"I think he's a bit more confident in his role there on the wing rather than at lock."
