Ponting warns of competitive Windies
Australian one-day captain Ricky Ponting expects his bowlers will face a challenge to contain the talented West Indian talented batsmen when the seven-match series begins in Jamaica on Saturday.
The Australians trained at Sabina Park, finding a slick outfield and promising pitch which should enable good scoring in the double-header weekend.
The Windies will rely on their batsmen to help break Australia's record 17-match winning streak which drove it to the memorable World Cup victory in Johannesburg in March.
"Their batting is very, very good with the likes of (Ramnaresh) Sarwan, (Shivnarine) Chanderpaul and (Brian) Lara and Chris Gayle has a pretty good one-day record," Ponting said.
"They've got a pretty good side.
"We've got a good bowling attack so there should be some very good cricket played throughout this competition and if the wickets are pretty similar to what we saw in the Test matches and the outfields being fast there should be some good totals made.
"It's going to be pretty entertaining cricket for the next few weeks."
Ponting and chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns, who is in Jamaica, are yet to discuss the team for the series opener.
Ponting batted in the nets for the first time since a virus forced him out of the fourth Test loss to the Windies.
The senior players who played in the back-to-back third and fourth Tests rested from training to prepare for the one-day series, which continues in St Lucia next Wednesday before double headers in Trinidad and Grenada.
