Tait doesn't rate his one-day chances
Shaun Tait doesn't rate his chances of breaking Australia's limited overs fast bowling roster despite being given a last-ditch chance to claim a spot in the World Cup squad.
Australia's dominance in the tri-series against England and New Zealand gave selectors the chance to look at Tait as a potential World Cup prospect by adding him to the squad for the next two pool matches.
Tait has been given a licence to bowl quick in Friday's match against England at the SCG and Sunday's clash with New Zealand at the MCG in what will be his first two one-day internationals.
Chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch said Australia wanted to explore its other fast bowling candidates for the Caribbean behind Brett Lee, Glenn McGrath, Nathan Bracken, Mitchell Johnson and Stuart Clark.
"These next two games form the final opportunity to look at him ahead of World Cup squad selection," Hilditch said.
"Ben Hilfenhaus performed well earlier in the series and at that point Shaun was injured.
"Shaun has made an impressive return from injury and we want to take a further look at him in the international environment."
Tait's inclusion gives him the chance to shoulder his way ahead of Johnson and Clark in the pace pecking order, but the 23-year-old did not rate highly his chances of making the final squad of 15.
"It depends on how many fast bowlers they take," he said.
"If they take five quicks they've got their quicks there - Lee, Clark, Bracken, Johnson, McGrath.
"It's still going to be hard to get a spot there, but you never know. I didn't realise I would get a call-up to the squad now, so you never say never."
Tait played two Tests on the 2005 Ashes tour but has not played an international since, although his domestic form has been good for South Australia this season after overcoming hamstring problems.
He averages 20.47 in domestic one-dayers for the Redbacks and notably took 8-43 against Tasmania three years ago and a magical 6-41 in last season's loss to NSW in the final.
But he still believes he is yet to make his mark as a match-winner with the ball, and was rueing an inability to strike late and trouble Victoria in SA's defeat in the Pura Cup match at the MCG on Monday.
"I've had the opportunity to bring the team home with a couple of victories and I haven't quite done that," he said.
"That's been the disappointing part. I'm still waiting for that to happen."
Tait's inclusion in the national squad means he won't play for the Redbacks in Wednesday's one-day clash against Victoria at the MCG.
