Reds hit by Kefu injury
Toutai Kefu's Queensland career could be almost over after the captain was diagnosed with an injury that may sink the Reds' flagging Super 12 campaign.
Kefu will visit a specialist on Wednesday to learn whether he needs surgery on a fractured left eye socket suffered in the sloppy 34-6 loss to the Crusaders in Christchurch last Saturday.
The bullocking No.8 has already been ruled out for four weeks but surgery could sideline him for up to eight weeks in a massive blow for the Reds.
The worst-case scenario would force Kefu out until the penultimate Super 12 round, ruining his hopes of a glorious Queensland send-off before he links with a Japanese club next year.
Kefu insists the Reds can revive their season without him but sports bookmakers aren't convinced, winding Queensland out to 50-1 to win the Super 12.
The Reds are still hopeful attacking spark Chris Latham can recover from a knee injury in time for Saturday's must-win clash with the Chiefs in Hamilton.
Kefu will watch that match on television, returning home to Brisbane for further treatment.
"I'm in no pain but I've been told I could suffer permanent damage if I get another knock at the moment," Kefu said.
He was accidentally kneed by teammate Nathan Sharpe and cleared of any damage after X-rays yesterday, but a CAT scan revealed the extent of the injury.
Kefu's World Cup hopes are not in doubt, but he has lost his reputation as the unbreakable Super 12 forward.
