Record win beckons for Els
World No.2 Ernie Els is set to record his sixth tournament win from eight outings when he takes a whopping nine-shot lead into the final round of the Johnnie Walker Classic.
The 33-year-old South African has blown away the rest of the field at Lake Karrinyup with scores of 64-65-64 to be at 23-under 193 after three rounds.
Such is his dominance the rest of the players will be battling for second place as they did last year behind El's compatriot Retief Goosen.
But this year Goosen is one of the pack of four a shot behind another South African in Craig Kamps and Frenchman Jean-Francois-Remesy, who share second spot on 14 under.
Australians Andre Stolz and Stephen Leaney are also at 13 under with New Zealander David Smail.
Victorian Craig Spence yesterday equalled Goosen's course record of 63 with an extraordinary run of eight birdies on the trot.
The 1999 Australian Masters champion said it had been a frustrating couple of years for him but his wife and caddie Nicole was helping his form turnaround after missing the cut in his last three starts.
"She is really good at keeping me involved in the mental routines rather than the outcomes," he said.
"We've always known that as soon as I start to worry about the scores and outcome, I go to bits. I don't play half as well."
