Capriati pulls out of Pan Pacific Open tennis
Jennifer Capriati has pulled out of next week's Pan Pacific Open tennis tournament in Japan because she has not yet fully recovered from recent eye surgery, organisers said.
The former world No.1 from the United States suffered a shock first-round defeat to Germany's Marlene Weingartner at the Australian Open last week and said the loss could be partly attributed to the operation.
"My eyes felt okay but I would have to say that the recovery time was not enough. I didn't give myself enough time to prepare properly," Capriati said after the 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 defeat in Melbourne.
Capriati, who was treated in November for a condition which gave her blurred vision, was also beaten in her season-opening match in Sydney by Tatiana Panova of Russia earlier this month.
Capriati's withdrawal was the second huge blow to the organisers of the $US1.3 million ($A2.21 million) Pan Pacific Open.
Defending champion Martina Hingis of Switzerland also pulled out, citing her slow recovery from ankle surgery in May.
Their withdrawals leave two-time champion Lindsay Davenport, who has shared the Tokyo indoor title with Hingis for the past six years, as the favourite alongside fellow American Monica Seles and Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia.
