Enqvist bows out off AAPT tennis
Third seed Thomas Enqvist bowed out of the AAPT tennis championships at Adelaide's Memorial Drive after losing in three sets to Belgian Kristof Vliegen.
Vliegen, a 20-year-old qualifier who turned pro in 2001 and is ranked 165th in the world, caused a major upset with his 3-6 6-4 6-3 win over Enqvist, who is ranked 121 points higher.
The Belgian will meet another qualifier in Great Britain's Arvind Parmar, who won through to the second round with victory over Israeli Harel Levy, 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 6-1.
Light but persistent rain forced the first round match between Richard Krajicek and Australia's Scott Draper to be postponed until tomorrow.
The match between tournament top seed Wayne Ferreira and rising French star Richard Gasquet was also put off until tomorrow.
Earlier on Tuesday, Spain's Alberto Martin cruised through the opening round with a crushing victory against Austrian Jurgen Melzer.
Martin, the tournament's sixth seed, accounted for Melzer 6-1 6-3.
Also advancing into the next round was second seed Max Mirnyi from Belarus, who defeated Italian Stefano Galvani 7-6 (7-5) 6-2.
