Hayden certain for Perth Test
Batsman Matthew Hayden is rated a certain starter for Friday's third Test against England even though he was unable to travel with the Australian squad to Perth on Tuesday.
Hayden was told to remain in Adelaide to recover from two operations for haemhorroids which affected him during the second Test victory by an innings and 51 runs.
The Queenslander will rejoin his teammates on Wednesday night and team physiotherapist Errol Alcott said Hayden may not need painkilling injections to play at the WACA Ground.
Even though Hayden underwent minor surgery last Friday and Sunday, chairman of selectors Trevor Hohns said the panel had not been asked to consider a standby player.
Alcott has played down Hayden's problems and said there was no doubt in his mind that Hayden would be able to continue the excellent run which has yielded 1027 runs at an average of 79.00 in nine Tests in 2002.
"It's uncomfortable but it's not disabling," Alcott said in Perth.
"It's not in our minds that he is not going to play here. The specialist felt that it would be good to hold Matthew in Adelaide for another day before he comes to Perth."
Alcott said Hayden would have been able to bat in the second innings if required after overcoming discomfort to make 46 in the first innings.
