Borgas bats SA to victory over NSW
South Australian youngster Cameron Borgas produced some extraordinary late hitting to guide his team to a dramatic five-wicket win over NSW at North Sydney Oval on Sunday.
Set a revised target of 267 off 43 overs at North Sydney Oval in a rematch of last summer's final, Borgas creamed an unbeaten 31 off just nine balls for the unlikely win.
It looked like the Redbacks would fall just short as they did in last season's decider at Adelaide Oval before Borgas' match-turning knock.
The Redbacks needed 18 runs off the last over bowled by NSW paceman Matthew Nicholson and the 23-year-old right-hander scored the winning runs with two balls to spare.
After Graham Manou hit a single off the first ball of the over, Borgas hit three sixes in the next four balls with the other delivery being a wide.
Borgas' brilliant work under lights came after Matthew Elliott's (111 off 112 balls) first domestic hundred in two summers appeared to be in vain.
Former Queensland spinner Nathan Hauritz (2-44 off nine overs) did a sterling job in the ground's small confines before Borgas snatched victory.
SA had been cruising along at 0-66 off 11 overs when Hauritz made an immediate impact in his first match for NSW.
He struck with his first delivery with a quick arm ball that skidded on and crashed into Mark Cosgrove's (31) off peg.
The Redbacks recovered with Elliott reaching his half century before Hauritz returned to the crease and ended Greg Blewett's (26) streaky innings.
The former Test player hit a rank full toss straight to Craig Simmons at long on to gift Hauritz a second wicket after the ex-Queenslander narrowly missed out on a lineball stumping decision on Elliott.
The Redbacks never really got on top of the required rate despite Elliott upping the ante by hitting Hauritz out of the ground.
Callum Ferguson (40) fell chasing quick runs and skipper Darren Lehmann entered and put Moises Henriques over the fence.
But Hauritz was soon back in action with a diving catch in the deep to finally dismiss Elliott.
Needing 32 off the last two overs, Lehmann's (21 off 10 balls) late assault came to an end with Aaron O'Brien somehow holding onto the ball on the third attempt in a spectacular catch.
With his demise, the match was seemingly in the bag for the Blues, but Borgas had other ideas.
Earlier allrounders Aaron O'Brien (58no off 60 balls) and Moises Henriques (43no off 24 balls) piloted NSW to 5-291 off 50 overs after being sent into bat.
Henriques served notice of his talent by treating the Redbacks with contempt in his cameo after the majority of the Blues batsmen failed to make the most of their starts.
Former Test bowler Jason Gillespie (1-45 off 10 overs) was the best of the SA bowlers, using the conditions to keep the Blues batsmen in check on the small ground.
Hauritz was handed the opportunity to debut for NSW after Stuart MacGill sat out the match with a niggling knee injury.
The legspinner is, however, still considered a chance of playing in the Pura Cup match against the Redbacks starting Tuesday.
