Mundine denies cameo league appearance
Anthony Mundine has quashed rumours of a return to the rugby league field despite reports he was set to play for a regional NSW side.
Three Ways United, a mainly Aboriginal Group 17 rugby league club in Griffith, was hoping Mundine would make a one-off appearance for them in the coming months to help boost the game in country NSW.
The Area News in Griffith reported that Mundine was keen to make an appearance alongside his childhood friend and former Dragons teammate Robbie Simpson, the club's captain-coach.
But Mundine, the mandatory contender for the WBA super middleweight title held by Dane Mikkel Kessler, laughed off talk of a comeback.
"No man, who started that rumour? I'd heard something about that," Mundine told AAP.
"I'm going to check the boys out, watch them, but I didn't say anything about playing.
"I've got a foot injury so I'm just trying to get over that, I'll just take it as it comes."
The 31-year-old, who has been sponsoring the side through his apparel brand Boxa International, said he was more concerned about preparing for his rematch with Kessler.
"He's a mate of mine, but I wasn't going to have a run or anything like that," Mundine said of his friendship with Simpson.
Mundine's manager, Khoder Nasser said he was relieved Mundine opted against a return to the football field.
"You'd have to be concerned (about injury), he's a very competitive individual," Nasser said.
Mundine, who played three State of Origin games for NSW in 1999, hasn't played rugby league since leaving St George Illawarra in 2000 to pursue his boxing career.
Last month he defeated arch rival Danny Green in Sydney in a unanimous points decision in one of the most anticipated domestic fights in Australian history.
"It's done, it's in the past, that's all history," Mundine said.
"It was a big part of my career but I'm going for bigger and better things."
