Green Mundine a possibility
Few would have predicted it but Anthony Mundine could be wearing the lime green of the Canberra Raiders in a couple of months.
The former boxing world champion spent the day in the national capital being courted by the Raiders and assured chief executive Simon Hawkins the NRL club was in the running for his services.
Mundine, 29, said last week he would return to rugby league following his world title fight against Danish boxer Mikel Kessler in Sydney on May 11 but he wants to sign to a club he believes can win a premiership.
The Raiders impressed on that front when they beat the Sydney Roosters 24-16 in a thrilling match at Canberra Stadium to remain the only unbeaten team in the competition.
Mundine was a guest of the Raiders' corporate box where he watched his brother-in-law Tyran Smith make his return for Canberra after a five-week suspension and his cousin Beau Mundine play in premier league.
It was also a chance for Hawkins to talk business.
"I had a good chat to him and he's obviously not going to name his preference until after his fight, other than he wants to play for a good side," Hawkins said, adding that he did not go into specifics about payment.
"He said that he wouldn't rule the Raiders out.
"So we'll see what happens in a couple of months' time."
Raiders coach Matt Elliott was keen to have Mundine on his roster, even though the Raiders had no need for another five-eighth give veteran Jason Smith's superb form.
