Muscat to front disciplinary hearing
Soccer hard man Kevin Muscat will become the first A-League player to front a disciplinary hearing after being charged with violent conduct on Tuesday.
Football Federation Australia (FFA) head of operations Matt Carroll laid the charge following video review of an incident involving the Melbourne Victory skipper and Sydney FC forward Saso Petrovski during Saturday night's match at Aussie Stadium.
The incident, which was not sighted by the referee or linesmen, occurred during the 69th minute of the match which the home team won 2-1.
Muscat, 32, could be hit with a suspension of between one and three matches if found guilty of violent conduct at the hearing in Sydney on Thursday night.
He could also be fined by the FFA tribunal.
"Melbourne Victory will await due process in regards to the disciplinary hearing against Kevin Muscat before making any public comment," said Victory general manager Tony Ising in a brief statement.
Muscat and Sydney's David Carney had previously been involved in an altercation as the two teams left the field during halftime, although the Victory captain later described that incident as "handbags at 10 paces".
Muscat has been one of Melbourne's best players in the opening season of the A-League, although the Victory has struggled in recent weeks with only one win in its last six matches.
Before returning to Australia for the inaugural A-League season, Muscat spent nine often controversial years playing at the highest level in England and Scotland where he was at one time dubbed "the most hated man in football".
Charlton winger Matty Holmes won a STG750,000 ($A1.74 million) pay-out after a Muscat tackle ended his professional career when the Australian was playing for Wolverhampton.
French international Christophe Dugarry and Newcastle's Craig Bellamy were among other players forced to spend lengthy spells on the injury list after heavy challenges from the Socceroos defender.
