Australia beats water polo world champs
The Australian women's water polo team have overcome world champions the United States 11-10 to win the Canada Cup in Montreal.
The victory in the four-nation tournament is a big boost for Stingers ahead of next year's Beijing Olympics, putting them right on track after losing the World Championship and World League finals to the US earlier this year.
The Stingers also lost a thriller to the US 12-11 in a penalty shootout in round play on Friday.
In the final on Monday, Australia trailed for most of the match but were pushed ahead thanks to Kate Gynther, who scored three goals and was named the game's most valuable player.
Head coach Greg McFadden said the win showed his side were in great form ahead of next week's six nation Holiday Cup tournament in the US - which the US has won for the last six consecutive years.
"Tonight we started poorly and improved with each quarter," he said.
"I'm very proud of the girls and the fight they have shown throughout the tournament.
"These games have been a great preparation for the Oceania Olympic qualification series against New Zealand on December 17-20 in Brisbane and will have us at our peak."
On the way to winning the Cup, the Stingers beat Canada 6-4 in the semi-finals on Saturday. Canada went on to beat world No.3 Russia 16-15 for the bronze medal.
