Boomers returning home from world titles
The Australian men's basketball teams departs the world championship well aware of the task ahead to bridge the gap to the sport's best teams in time for the Beijing Olympics.
The Boomers were eliminated in the round of 16 after a 113-73 hammering at the hands of a rampant United States side driven to re-claim its former status as the world's best team.
It was a predictable result for an Australian team that had plenty of debutants and only one player, Sam Mackinnon, with previous world championship experience.
The physical differences between Australia and leading teams such as the US, Lithuania and Argentina were alarming and coach Brian Goorjian was preaching to his players to appreciate where they need to improve.
"We had a problem (against the US) in that we couldn't get any defensive stops," he said.
"It's an experience to all the players going back to all their club teams on where they need to get physically to be competitive."
Andrew Bogut had an inconsistent tournament, but had a solid 20-point night against the Dream Team.
He felt the Australians had surpassed pre-tournament expectations, but knew just how difficult it was going to be facing the US following his rookie season with Milwaukee in the NBA.
"We definitely came further than we were told we would," he said.
"Anytime you get out of your pool and play good basketball and have to face the US, it's tough.
"We matched it with them early and then they started getting dunks, got some confidence and starting hitting jumpshots.
"They're the most talented team here by far."
