Punters shun big Slipper favourites
There was plenty of money at the Golden Slipper Call of the Card at Randwick but it wasn't for the favourite Snitzel or undefeated filly Fashions Afield.
Punters were bent on finding value for money in what has been billed as the most open Slipper in recent memory, and Opportunity, Stratum and Al Samer were the ones they came for.
"The lack of support for Fashions Afield was quite surprising and certainly punters consider it the most open Slipper on record," said bookmaker Colin Tidy.
"They were prepared to back all the horses between $8 and $21 and there was solid support for each of those, but when it came to the favourites they weren't that interested."
Most punters decided to take their chances on getting better than the $3.70 offered for Snitzel and $7 for Fashions Afield but found plenty to interest them outside that pair.
The big movers were Opportunity, backed in from $20 to $17, Flying Pegasus from $31 to $26, Domesday, $26 to $21, while roughie Seidnazar was specked at $91 to close at $81.
However, bookmaker Robbie Waterhouse tipped the favourites would be back in favour on Saturday.
"I expect Snitzel and Fashions Afield will be in demand on race day," Waterhouse said.
"Today was more for the semi-professionals and they're (favourites) not the horses they usually want to find, they want more value."
High-profile punter Sean Bartholomew spread his cash around, taking $18 about Black Opal Stakes winner Al Samer to win $100,000, Opportunity at $20 and Domesday at $26 to win $50,000, and Stratum ($9) to collect $20,000.
