Lee, Kasper to get early indication
Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz will get an early indication of their Test prospects on Friday when Australia settles its team for the final trans-Tasman one-dayer.
The world champions will name their XI to play New Zealand in Napier on Saturday with one eye on the opening Test in Christchurch, starting Thursday.
Lee, bowling at a lethal 150kmh-plus pace and regularly breaking through for early wickets, is the only one of the pace quartet not to be rested in the lopsided five-match series.
But coach John Buchanan on Thursday indicated the rotation policy may not extend to the blond tearaway as the selectors prepare to give the likely Test pace attack one last warm-up at McLean Park.
"It's important for us to finish that one off so we're looking to put a team on the field that we believe will give the best account of itself, but also I guess a bit of an eye to the Test match series as well," he said.
With both Lee and Kasprowicz boasting undeniable cases for selection alongside senior statesman Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie, either would justifiably feel hard done by if overlooked for the Test at Jade Stadium.
Chief selector Trevor Hohns has admitted that one-day and first-class form would be viewed separately. It's a boost to the claims of Kasprowicz, considering he took 47 Test wickets at 23.87 last year.
But if skipper Ricky Ponting wants to employ the speed and intimidation of Lee against a brittle NZ top-order he may sway the selectors.
Opener Matthew Hayden remains in slight doubt for the Christchurch Test after struggling in his first full net session since injuring his right shoulder in the second one-dayer nine days ago.
Hayden is improving after straining his AC joint in taking an outfield catch but is an unlikely starter on Saturday after showing pain in the nets.
