Australian paceman Brett Lee was twice on a hat-trick as he ruined the West Indies' run-chase and set up a 73-run thrashing in a day-night tri-series cricket match at Adelaide Oval.

Chasing Australia's 8-269, the Windies were bowled out for 196 in the 45th over, with Lee named man of the match after taking 4-38 and an unbeaten 38 off 44 balls.

He put the winless tourists on the defensive from the start, removing openers Wavell Hinds (0) with the last ball of the opening over, and Chris Gayle (2) with the first ball of his next over.

Gayle's dismissal was completed by a marvellous one-handed catch by wicketkeeper Brad Haddin diving to his right, after Gayle gloved a short ball down the leg-side.

That took the visitors to 2-3, and Shivnarine Chanderpaul narrowly survived Lee's first hat-trick ball, when he padded up to the first delivery he faced, prompting a massive appeal from the Australians, with umpire Steve Davis judging the ball was missing off-stump.

Chanderpaul (55) and Ramnaresh Sarwan (39) steadied the innings with a 92-run third-wicket stand, before Brad Hogg removed Sarwan.

Chanderpaul was run out in the 29th over, after calling for a runner late in his innings, with the runner Hinds caught metres short of his ground by a Michael Clarke direct hit from point.

Marlon Samuels then fell to Darren Lehmann, leaving the Windies at 5-147 in the 36th over and all their hopes resting on dynamic skipper Brian Lara (29).

But Lee, with the third over of his second spell, found a thick top edge off Lara's bat, as the West Indies captain attempted a pull shot, and Lee caught the skied ball himself.

Next ball he trapped Courtney Browne LBW with a yorker length delivery for a golden duck, to leave the visitors floundering at 7-153, with no hope of winning, and himself with another hat-trick opportunity.
