Aussies into third round in Spain
Brazilian Armando Daltro created a major upset in the Billabong Pro, eliminating Mark Occhilupo as 16 other Australians made the third round of the world championship event.
Daltro, currently rated 46th, won their low-scoring second-round exchange with just 11.17 points.
Occy won this event as part of his successful 1999 world title campaign and the current ratings No.8 is always considered a favourite in the left-hand river mouth break.
World No.4 Joel Parkinson survived a close battle in the one to 1.5metre waves against American wildcard Pete Mendia.
"I won on two four-point rides," said a disbelieving Parkinson.
"A win's a win, but I was struggling. The waves looked good, but were really bumpy and fast, making it hard to find a place to do a turn."
Top seeds Taj Burrow and Luke Egan also progressed from the second round along with fellow Aussies Jake Patterson, Nathan Webster, Danny Wills, Darren O'Rafferty and Troy Brooks who took care of last weekend's finalist in France Bruce Irons.
The Hawaiian only days ago secured his best result of the season with a runner-up placing but suffered his fifth 33rd placing of the year.
Californians Taylor Knox and Shane Beschen secured big wins, eliminating Australian Luke Hitchings and Hawaiian 2000 world champ Sunny Garcia, respectively.
Knox produced a stellar performance with the highest combined total of the tournament so far, 18.03 points.
