The Kookaburras sent an ominous warning to their Olympic opposition with a 7-1 demolition of New Zealand in the second Test in Cairns.

After Tuesday night's indifferent effort, the Kookaburras found their attacking rhythm and piled on five unanswered second half goals with doubles to Michael McCann and Grant Schubert, the highlight of an imposing performance.

The match was won with a four-minute burst just after half time which saw three quickfire goals.

McCann's second, followed by Troy Elders' penalty corner and Jamie Dwyers' field goal in the 42nd minute blew the score out to 5-1 and allowed the Kookaburras to coast to victory.

McCann opened the scoring and got the home team in the right frame of mind with a goal after 13 minutes before New Zealand's main scoring-threat, Hayden Shaw, ripped a blinding penalty corner flick past the Kookaburras defence to level the score midway through the half.

That was as close as New Zealand came in the match, with Schubert's first in the 29th minute giving Australia a deserved lead at the break.

In their second last competitive match before the start of their Olympic campaign against New Zealand in less than a month, the Kookaburras' goal-scoring machine clicked into overdrive after the half time break.

The momentum gained by the four-minute hat-trick of goals to start the half was continued as Schubert grabbed his double and Michael Brennan scored seven minutes before fulltime to complete an emphatic win.

The third and final Test will be played at 1pm on Saturday with the Kookaburras faced with the challenge of continuing tonight's form and maintaining their dominance over their first-round Olympic opponent.
