Sapphires win at world champs
The Australian young women's under-20 basketball team has beaten China 83-67 at the world championships in Sibenik.
The Sapphires' defence set up the win, with a 24-8 second quarter proving decisive.
Laura Summerton led the Australians with 23 points while Shelley Hammonds added 22 points, six rebounds and four assists in an impressive all-round performance.
Hollie Grima racked up 12 points and 14 rebounds whilst also contributing four assists. Michele Musselwhite also had 10 points for the Sapphires.
Coach Mark Wright was pleased with his team's first win.
"We didn't shoot the ball well again but it was a great win with our defence proving that it can win games," he said.
"We had 24 more shots than China, so we are getting the opportunities. It was clearly a much tougher and more determined Sapphires that took the court today."
Hammonds said the team was out to make amends after its shock 69-58 loss to Latvia.
"The team came out a lot more focused and determined to get the job done today," she said.
"Yesterday was a big shock and in a way it has been good as it has made us mentally and physically tougher for the games ahead.
