Wilkinson set to miss Tour Down Under
World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson is poised to pull out of England's June tour to New Zealand and Australia, his Newcastle Falcons club boss Rob Andrew says.
The 24-year-old, who kicked the winning drop goal in the World Cup final against Australia last November, is recovering form a shoulder operation.
He has yet to resume contact training and is unlikely to make his England comeback until November 13 against Canada.
"We've told him for weeks just to forget about it until next season. I doubt very much he will be fit for the tour," said Andrew, who has watched Wilkinson's recovery from close quarters.
"This has been a tough time for Jonny but he has to come to terms with the fact that there's no point in coming back too soon."
England coach Clive Woodward said last week he would not risk Wilkinson if he was not 100 per cent fit.
"When you go to Australia and New Zealand it isn't the place to take anyone who isn't fully match fit or even anyone only 99 per cent fit," he said.
