Lyon ponders future
FFormer Test centre Jamie Lyon is pondering his future after Parramatta refused to grant him a release from his $250,000 a season National Rugby League contract.
Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald laid down the law at a meeting with Lyon and his manager Allan Gainey also attended by the club's general manager Greg Mitchell, coach Brian Smith and football manager Tony Zappia.
Lyon, 22, is contracted to the Eels until the end of 2006 but looked lost to the NRL when he returned to hometown Wee Waa after round one saying he'd had enough of professional rugby league.
He sought a release but Fitzgerald said Lyon "has not and will not" get one and was deciding what to do next.
"The discussions were long and fruitful. Jamie has asked to return to Wee Waa where he can make a decision on his future," Fitzgerald said of Lyon who has played five Tests.
"We expect an answer from him some time next week.
"I can confirm that Jamie has not, and will not, be granted a release from his contract with the Parramatta club in order that he can play for any other club, including the Wee Waa Panthers."
Fitzgerald said talks were "amicable" and that he "had not ruled out" Lyon playing again for the Eels.
"If he doesn't play for us this year we will have another chat at the end of the season," he told AAP.
"He either plays for us or no one else."
