Eagles provide heartache for Bulldogs
West Coast squeezed a season's worth of AFL comebacks into one afternoon to snatch a remarkable seven-point win over the Western Bulldogs at Telstra Dome.
Down by 34 points in barely a blink of an eye, the Eagles came back from the dead twice - first to get into the game and again when their momentum dried up in the third quarter.
Still down by 10 halfway through the final term, Chris Judd's telling disposals inspired the Eagles to four goals as West Coast won 22.12 (144) to 20.17 (137).
The Bulldogs' loss was hard for coach Peter Rohde and his men to stomach after last year's wooden spooner had new forward Jade Rawlings kick 7.4 to inspire his side to a performance that would normally have been enough.
The game was still alive with 90 seconds left when new Bulldog Steven Koops was denied a free kick for holding in front of goal.
Had the free been paid Koops would have had the chance to put his side in front, but Eagle Ashley Sampi again broke Bulldog hearts by streaming out of the middle to kick the sealer.
Sampi was also the Eagles' saviour in round 11 last year, when he goaled after the siren to ensure a draw against the Bulldogs.
The Eagles weathered the early storm and with such a big deficit, had to attack at every opportunity.
The dynamic onball brigade of Judd, Ben Cousins and Chad Fletcher helped West Coast kick nine of the next 10 goals to lead by 13 points before halftime and with another three goals early in the third quarter, sat 20 points up.
But veteran Drew Banfield went down with a knee injury and after a lengthy break as he was carried off, the Bulldogs regathered and came back again.
