Carney credits Sydney for career boost
Socceroo winger David Carney credits his success in England's Championship league to the time he spent playing alongside Dwight Yorke and others at Sydney FC.
Carney created a shock win for struggling Sheffield United in their FA Cup third tie match against Bolton at the weekend.
He said after unsuccessful spells in Britain at Everton, Oldham, Halifax and Hamilton he had no regrets about joining Sydney FC before getting that chance to return to England and play for Sheffield United.
"I never gave up on myself," he told The Sun.
"I knew I had the potential I just wanted someone to put their faith in me.
"I was at Everton for three years from the age of 16 but never got a first-team chance.
"David Moyes released me but I still remember what he told me as I left. He said sometimes you need to take one step back to take another one forward."
After joining Oldham, the club went into administration and Carney did not enjoy his subsequent spells at Halifax or Hamilton.
"But back at Sydney, I was alongside better players like Dwight Yorke," he said.
"I got a few goals, got in the national team and things started to happen for me."
