'Shattered' Raider Carney to meet peers
"Shattered" Canberra star Todd Carney is expected to meet the Raiders' player leadership group on Monday to discuss the ultimatum handed to him by the NRL club.
Canberra chairman John McIntyre revealed it was Carney's teammates on the leadership group - Alan Tongue, Troy Thompson, Josh Miller, Glen Turner and Scott Logan - who drew up the conditions the troubled playmaker would have to meet to stay at the club after his latest off-field indiscretion.
They include a 2008 season-ending suspension, community work and a return to counselling in the wake of the accusation that he urinated on a man during a drinking session last Sunday night.
"It was very impressive to see the leadership group draw that plan up," McIntyre told AAP.
Asked how Carney was, his manager David Riolo said: "He's absolutely shattered. He's not happy."
The Raiders' ultimatum was delivered to Carney by chief executive Don Furner after being agreed by the club's board.
"We pained over it for quite some time," said McIntyre. "We talked about this one subject for more than an hour."
While a complaint to police about Carney's behaviour was later withdrawn, the Raiders conducted their own investigation and indefinitely suspended Carney and teammate Bronx Goodwin.
The club also imposed a substantial fine on Carney, estimated to be about $20,000.
A decision on Goodwin's future has been delayed pending the outcome of an August 11 court hearing where the fringe first grader will face two charges of assault.
Despite Carney's absence, the Raiders crushed the Gold Coast Titans 46-4 on Saturday night to climb into the top eight.
A season-ending ban would also almost certainly rule Carney out of the rugby league World Cup in October/November.
Test coach Ricky Stuart is believed to be a fan of Carney's but is now unlikely to include him in his preliminary squad for the tournament.
