Walker, Hopoate to dish out discipline
Manly pair Andrew Walker and John Hopoate have received plenty of slaps over the wrist during their colourful careers, but this year the former problem children will be dishing out their own brand of discipline.
Walker and Hopoate - along with captain Steve Menzies, hooker Chad Randall and new recruit Michael Monaghan - have been appointed to the National Rugby League club's leadership committee in 2004.
Their duties include deciding on punishment for wayward teammates - something that would have seemed inconceivable given their track records.
But coach Des Hasler paid tribute to the pair, whose off and on-field indiscretions have at times overshadowed their undoubted talent.
"Sometimes experience is the biggest thing," Hasler said.
"I think it speaks volumes for their personalities that they have re-invented themselves, made sacrifices and made the changes.
"Another player may have faded into the distance but they have faced their demons and done something about it.
"I think they are shining examples."
Hasler said Walker had been a pre-season revelation since joining the Sea Eagles from rugby union.
His time at the ACT Brumbies was overshadowed by a series of alcohol-related incidents which led to his axing from the Australian team.
