Bevan out with fractured rib
Australia gained three points in tonight's washed out MCG tri-series cricket match against Zimbabwe but was dealt a massive blow with one-day star Michael Bevan ruled out of the finals with a fractured rib.
Bevan copped a blow to the ribs in the Adelaide nets last weekend and further aggravated the injury during his innings of 56 in Australia's total of 9-263.
X-rays confirmed Bevan had cracked his fifth rib on his right side and with rest the only way to treat the injury, he's not only out of the best-of-three finals series against India, but in doubt for the five one-dayers in Sri Lanka next month.
"It's a boney fracture so it takes time (to heal), so you're looking at anywhere from two to six weeks," Australian physiotherapist Errol Alcott said.
With Bevan's injury a major setback against the red-hot Indians, tonight's rain-ruined match was of little gain for Australia other than Damien Martyn's return to form with an entertaining 42 at the top of the innings.
With steady rain coming during the interval, there was no further play after Australia's innings and the match was abandoned at 8.35pm (AEST) on Thursday.
Bevan said he felt discomfort halfway through his innings and knew something was wrong.
"As a batsman when you get hit and the pain stays with you, you know something's happened," he said.
"It's a little bit hard now to say whether I'll be right or I won't be going (to Sri Lanka)."
Australia plays India in Perth on Sunday and with captain Ricky Ponting to be rested - the returning Adam Gilchrist will lead the side in his place - it leaves Australia with two of their best one-day batsmen out.
