Jets down Sydney FC in spiteful clash
Newcastle Jets clinched their first A-League victory on Sunday, defeating Sydney FC 2-1 in a spiteful match at EnergyAustralia Stadium.
Ante Milicic and Richard Johnson netted for the Jets in the first half, while Dwight Yorke replied for the visitors late in a match that included two red cards.
Sydney's Steve Corica was dismissed for flooring Newcastle substitute Mark Bridge in the 70th minute.
The challenge drew players from both sides into a scuffle and Newcastle defender Mateo Corbo was red-carded for his part in the melee.
Corbo had escaped punishment in the 7th minute after greeting former Newcastle player Robbie Middleby with an elbow.
Middleby reacted, starting the first melee of the match played before 9,127 fans.
Yorke went on as a substitute just before half-time when his side was down by two and his goal in the 78th minute led to a frantic finish.
Newcastle took the lead in the 6th minute after Milicic played wall passes with Ned Zelic and Nick Carle.
Sydney's Terry McFlynn made a desperate lunge towards Milicic as he honed in on goal, but Milicic eluded the defender and his deft chip floated past Sydney goalkeeper Clint Bolton into the net.
In the 18th minute, Newcastle midfielder Richard Johnson put his side further in front.
