Moon goal lifts Roar to win over Jets
Queensland Roar midfielder Warren Moon scored a sweet volley from outside the box to give his side a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at EnergyAustralia Stadium on Saturday night.
Moon struck in the 68th minute, 10 minutes after coming on as a substitute.
Newcastle lost three key players in the first half with playmaker Nick Carle being sent off and Richard Johnson and Ante Milicic suffering injuries.
Referee Srebre Delovski sent Queensland midfielder Matt McKay off in the 80th minute for a second bookable offence and red-carded Carle on the half-hour mark for a studs-up challenge on Queensland right back Karl Dodd.
Most of the 7432 fans booed Dodd for the rest of the half and he was replaced at half-time.
The only goal of the match came after a cross from the left by Queensland striker Michael Baird.
Stuart Musialik cleared the ball only as far as Moon, whose strike found the top left corner.
The Jets believed they should have had a penalty in the 65th minute when James Monie was bundled over by Queensland defender Remo Buess in the box.
But Delovski instead booked Monie, who had replaced Milicic up front, for diving.
The decision infuriated Newcastle coach Richard Money, who clearly believed it was unfounded.
