Response to EI 'tremendous': McDonald
The response of the racing industry and other horse owners in the fight to halt the outbreak of equine influenza (EI) has been "tremendous", the NSW primary industries minister says.
The number of horses confirmed in NSW with EI stands at 47 and a ban remains in effect on the movement of all horses across Australia.
A nationwide ban on all race meetings also is in effect.
Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald said the horse industry had been very cooperative with the lockdown, which was essential in the battle against the disease.
Vigilance was now all important, particularly in returning the racing industry to normal, he said.
"The industry knows the potentially disastrous ramifications of this disease and they have been tremendous in the effort to rid this disease from our shores," he said.
"Horse owners and trainers want to do the right thing regarding the movement restrictions and by reporting any flu-like symptoms in their horses.
"This is the first stage in the control effort, but the positive work so far will help us get on top of the disease."
