Smith shines as Qld look to clean sweep

Man-of-the-match Cameron Smith said Queensland had turned their attention to sweeping NSW following their series clinching 10-6 win in Origin II on Wednesday night.

Smith, who outpointed counterpart Danny Buderus in a sterling performance, said Queensland planned on enjoying the camp for the third match on July 4 in Brisbane.

"There's still a job to do," he said.

"We don't want to finish on a sour note up in Brissie and we want to get the 3-0 win."

However the Maroons almost celebrated Wednesday night's victory too soon.

The Queenslanders, including coach Mal Meninga started rejoicing when the Maroons pounced on a loose ball with seconds remaining before Buderus somehow reefed it back for one last roll of the dice.

"One of the boys took the ball up and they got the ball back," said Smith.

"My heart nearly jumped out of my chest."

Smith said last year's Origin series win was special because Queensland came back from 1-0 down.

"Last year was special because our backs were against the wall but this one was certainly sweeter," said Smith after Queensland finally broke their Telstra hoodoo at their 12th attempt since 1999.

"Very sweet to win it on Blues soil.

"We built our game around our defence and we knew we had to aim up against a very good team who played great football."

Smith said the first 40 minutes, during which rookie referee Shayne Hayne kept the whistle in his pocket, was the hardest he'd played.

"I was absolutely buggered, I ended up going out to the sideline just doing what I could do."

Smith made seven dummy half runs, some crucial with every metre a struggle in such a dour defensive contest.

"I think I only had about three runs in the first game and it was something I really wanted to work on," said Smith.

"I really pride myself on my running game and trying to spark the boys with my attack."

Smith said there was no bad blood between him and his opposite number Buderus, despite expectations of a bitter battle.

"There weren't any words (with Buderus) tonight," he said.

"I just got told by a few people that he chased me across the field at the end but I had my back turned.

"Maybe he just got a little frustrated."
