Thompson makes bad game memorable
Adelaide midfielder Scott Thompson turned a very forgettable game into a memorable one when he racked up a half century of disposals at Metricon Stadium on Saturday.
The Crows veteran on-baller fed off the work of ruckmen Sam Jacobs and Kurt Tippett to rack-up 51 disposals (21 kicks, 30 handballs) - the second highest recorded in the game's history.
The record belongs to dual Brownlow medallist Greg Williams who amassed 53 disposals against St Kilda in 1989.
The fact the record was not surpassed was not through a lack of trying, especially by one radio caller from Adelaide five minutes from the end of the game.
The caller craned his head out of the commentary box and yelled out to Thompson directly below - "you're on 49 Thommo."
It fell on deaf ears.
Thompson knew he had impressive stats but nothing like the half century he produced on a flat green wicket on a dry and sunny day.
"No I didn't know to be honest, I had no idea I had that much of the ball," Thompson told AAP.
"I knew early on in the game I had the ball in my hands a fair bit."
The day look promising early on for Thompson with 18 possessions in the first quarter followed by 10 (second term), 14 (third) and nine (fourth).
He was unsure who his direct opponent was nor did he seem to care.
But he was grateful for not being tagged.
"They didn't run a tag today and that's always nice" Thompson said.
"With the midfield rotations today, you always find yourself on midfield opponents."
He praised the work of Jacobs and Tippett, who between them had 67 of a possible 81 hit outs and focussed on the sides third win in four matches under interim coach Mark Bickley.
"As a midfield we were always good in patches, and to finish off the game like we did was a good result," Bickley said,
"Sam Jacobs was really good in the ruck and that made life easy for the midfield."
ickley said Thompson was having his best season and should be in contention for All-Australian selection.
