Sharks count injury cost after caning
Cronulla coach Shane Flanagan is hopeful winger Matthew Wright has not seriously injured his neck after being stretcherd off in Monday night's NRL loss to St George Illawarra.
Wright left WIN Jubilee Oval after a 45th minute tackle which involved Dragons prop Michael Weyman coming over the top of the winger and falling on him to the turf.
Wright lay on his back for several minutes as medical staff attended to him before being stretchered from the ground to the applause of both sides.
"The doctor seems to think it's not too bad but he's just gone to hospital for some scans and just for precautionary reasons but hopefully he'll be OK," Flanagan said.
The incident was similar to one involving Newcastle centre Junior Sa'u during Sunday's loss to Manly, with Sa'u cleared of major damage.
On a tough night for the Sharks, their 38-8 loss was compounded by a calf injury to inspirational captain Paul Gallen, who left the field in the second half to have the leg iced.
"I don't know (how bad it is) yet," Gallen said.
"It's a bit sore. I couldn't keep running so I'll see how it is in the next couple of days."
The Dragons welcomed back centre Matt Cooper from a fractured eye socket that meant he missed the past four games.
Forwards Beau Scott (virus) and Dean Young (knee) were ruled out before kick-off but coach Wayne Bennett is expecting that pair, along with captain Ben Hornby (hand) and utility back Kyle Stanley (groin), back in the next couple of weeks.
"There is nothing long-term there," Bennett said.
"Beau Scott's got a swollen spleen that has not gone down enough as a result of the virus he got from the Origin camp.
"Ben Hornby broke a bone in his hand so maybe next week or the week after.
"Dean Young is probably another couple of weeks with a knee injury.
"Kyle Stanley will back next week. We're pretty close to full strength."
