St Kilda's Gwilt to miss AFL season
James Gwilt's AFL season is over after the St Kilda defender had scans on Sunday showing he had ruptured an anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
"It is confirmed he has an ACL injury and he will require surgery," a club spokeswoman said on Sunday.
The 82-game veteran, who played in St Kilda's losing grand final side against Collingwood last year, has not missed a game for the Saints in 2011 and is averaging 18.9 possessions.
St Kilda scored their sixth win from eight matches when they beat West Coast at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night by 21 points. Gwilt finished the game on crutches and was consoled by team-mates who knew his season was likely to be finished.
Meanwhile, Collingwood will monitor the fitness of defender Alan Toovey (hand) and midfielder Scott Pendlebury (shoulder) ahead of Saturday night's clash with Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium.
Brisbane skipper Jonathan Brown has had his face fractured for the second time this season after suffering concussion in a sickening collision with team-mate Mitch Clark in Sunday's loss to Geelong at the Gabba.
Brown missed six matches earlier this season with facial fractures.
While initial x-rays cleared the Lion of any damage, further scans revealed several small fractures and he will undergo surgery on Monday.
Fremantle coach Mark Harvey said he rated All-Australian ruckman Aaron Sandilands a 50-50 chance to return from a toe injury for next Sunday's derby with West Coast in Perth.
"Roger (Hayden) would be the major concern. He got a direct knock to his leg, so we'll have to assess that situation tomorrow and get him scanned," Harvey said on Sunday.
"But apart from that, we subbed Michael Johnson - he got a knee to his calf so I'd envisage he'd be OK."
Harvey added ruckman Jon Griffin was sore after a tough battle with Sydney's Shane Mumford but was expected to play next week.
