Lewis in doubt for Panthers
Penrith backrower Luke Lewis admits he is in grave doubt to face Newcastle on Saturday night as the injury toll from Wednesday night's State of Origin clash worsens.
Lewis, who scored the opening try for NSW in their 18-8 win over Queensland, injured his hamstring after coming off the bench for the Blues.
NSW medical officials cautioned Lewis he risked a longterm injury by pushing the injury too hard, placing the Panthers lock in a tough situation.
Penrith need every competition point they can get their hands on as the club looks to stay in touch with the NRL top eight.
"I'm not too sure yet, I pulled up with a slight hammy strain, but look I'll be doing everything I can to get out there on Saturday night," Lewis told Sky Sports Radio about his chances of taking on the Knights at Ausgrid Stadium.
"I've got a couple of days to try and get it right but the (NSW) physio and doctor are saying to look after it, make sure you don't go too crazy on it because you're pretty close to tearing it."
Origin III has already claimed a host of victims for this weekend's round of club games with St George Illawarra pair Ben Creagh (ankle) and Beau Scott (knee and perforated eardrum) and Manly's Will Hopoate (hamstring) all ruled out.
