Gordon ready for Origin pressure
Michael Gordon's Penrith team-mates say NSW's new goalkicker will have no trouble handling the pressure cooker of State of Origin.
Sharp-shooter Gordon, with an NRL success rate above 80 per cent in 2010, will be the Blues' first choice kicker in his debut Origin game at ANZ Stadium next Wednesday.
But the prospect of a sideline conversion to save some Blues pride in front of 70,000 fans and millions of television viewers isn't a problem, says Panthers star Luke Lewis.
"He'll come off the field and say, `Did you hear the blokes on the sideline?', he'll have a bit of a laugh about it," Lewis told reporters on Wednesday.
"He just goes with whatever, he doesn't care too much about anything.
"The hardest thing to do in rugby league is just take everything in your stride and not let too much faze you so he's unreal to have in the team in that sense."
Lewis has urged Panthers officials to re-sign Gordon as a matter of priority with the winger off-contract at the end of 2010.
"I know Penrith want him because I know big Pet's (captain Petero Civoniceva) been in there saying `look we've got to get these guys signed'," Lewis said.
"Micky was next on the list. I think the first thing was to get Michael Jennings across the line, I think he's nearly done.
"Hopefully that all happened and we can get it all sorted so he can just worry about playing footy and doing his job for us at Penrith and not worrying too much about his future.
"He's a great winger and an exceptional goalkicker so we need to keep him."
Meanwhile, Lewis has joined the chorus calling for minor offences in NRL matches to not result in missing Origin games.
Lewis missed Origin II this year after a one-week suspension for a dangerous throw.
"You just never know when you're going to get your next Origin game and Origin's a pretty prestigious jersey," Lewis said.
"To miss out on an accident that you do on the weekend for your club is pretty sad.
"They're the rules at the moment but hopefully they do change.
"It was the worst feeling in the world knowing that I was going to miss out on the Origin game ... in Queensland, which is probably the best arena to play at."
