Lewis facing Origin injury heartache
Penrith utility Luke Lewis says he is hopeful that the toe injury he sustained in the Panthers' 26-10 NRL win over Wests Tigers on Friday will not rule him out of the second State of Origin clash in Sydney on June 24.
Lewis has been unable to walk properly since damaging his big toe late in the game at Leichhardt and he admitted that he fears it may be broken.
"I'll be having an X-ray on Tuesday and until then we don't know for sure what the full extent of the problem is but I do think I have done some damage to it," he told AAP.
"It is pretty painful at the moment and I haven't had too much sleep over the weekend."
Lewis said he would be bitterly disappointed to miss out on the chance to face Queensland but is trying to remain positive.
"I've had a splint made up and I have been hobbling around so if the game was next week I would have no chance, but hopefully it will just be heavy bruising and not anything serious," he said.
"I have been really enjoying my footy this season and it would be a real blow if I had to spend time out, but if I do, hopefully it will only be for one or two games but until Tuesday it is just a case of waiting and hoping."
