Glenn claims Broncos captaincy, record
Judging by his thick Kiwi accent Alex Glenn sounds more like a candidate for the Warriors captaincy.
But the 22-year-old will happily lay claim to being Brisbane skipper against Canberra in Sunday's NRL clash at Suncorp Stadium - as well as a slice of club history.
It is believed Glenn will become the youngest captain in the Broncos' 23-year existence when he fills in for Queensland and Test skipper Darren Lockyer this weekend.
"It is an honour that I am truly happy about, the club has so much history," Glenn said of the milestone on Wednesday.
Glenn's happy tune may change when he leads a Broncos side without 10 top-liners due to Origin duty and injury against a Raiders outfit still smarting after letting last round's game slip against North Queensland.
But Broncos coach Anthony Griffin backed his band of youngsters.
"It is going to be a stretch on our playing staff but these weekends are good opportunities to show character under pressure," he said.
"A lot of guys are going to get opportunities and I am sure they are going to take them."
Glenn has already shown he can handle a big occasion.
He found himself thrust centre stage with the captains of Brisbane's other footy teams - Reds (rugby), Lions (AFL) and Roar (soccer) - at Wednesday's Four Codes charity lunch.
But despite the late notice, Glenn handled the occasion with aplomb as Griffin looked on - along with hundreds of guests.
Reminded at the lunch that he was also the Broncos under 20s captain under Griffin, Glenn brought the house down when he laughed off claims he was the coach's pet.
"No, I just think he likes my bongo music," he said.
Glenn could have made Broncos history a fortnight ago.
He was named captain for the round 11 match against Manly, but lock Corey Parker backed up from Origin I and led the side.
Another looking forward to making up for lost time is winger Shea Moylan will make his NRL debut after two false starts.
"He's been on standby a couple of times - he got pulled the day of a game I think against the Storm (five weeks ago) which would have been hard for him," Griffin said.
"But he's going to get his chance this week.
"And once they get their chance it is a real adrenalin rush for them and they invariably go out and perform well."
