Kangaroos close to Hobart AFL deal
North Melbourne president James Brayshaw says the AFL club is hopeful of securing a deal as soon as next week to play two home matches in Hobart each season.
Brayshaw said if the three-year deal was finalised, the Kangaroos would start playing matches at Bellerive Oval next season and stood to make about $600,000 per game.
He said it would also give them a chance to enter an untapped market and increase their supporter base.
Brayshaw said the plan had the support of the AFL, the Hobart council and chamber of commerce and Cricket Tasmania, which manages Bellerive Oval.
He said the final step was to win approval from the state government, which met with AFL officials this week.
"All the blocks are in place, it just needs the government to commit," Brayshaw told the Nine Network's AFL Footy Show on Thursday night.
"I understand they're going to meet as early as Monday next week.
"I remain, as do the AFL, very confident that they will give it the tick.
"Because it will be fantastic, it's a great joint Hobart and the venue is ready to go, so it will be I reckon a winner."
If the deal goes ahead, it will mean there are a total of six home and away games played in Tasmania each season, given Hawthorn already play four matches per year in Launceston.
