Roos keep pushing for Good Friday footy

North Melbourne president James Brayshaw says it is "ridiculous" that AFL matches are not played on Good Friday and believes it will eventually change.

The 'Roos have been pushing the case for an AFL blockbuster on the Christian holy day for several years, while the AFL has so far maintained staunch opposition to the concept.

"I just think it's ridiculous that Good Friday footy isn't played," Brayshaw said at a club function ahead of Sunday's match against Hawthorn.

"Rugby union and rugby league both play and they don't even have a hiccup, yet our game doesn't play for reasons that I've never particularly understood.

"We understand the religious reasons, but I just don't get in 2009 with an extremely multicultural Australian society why we can't manage to fit it in somewhere, at least later in the day."

Brayshaw said the club had approached the Seven Network about a game to tie in with their annual appeal on Good Friday to raise money for Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital.

"We've gone to the AFL through Channel Seven, that was one of the things we did," Brayshaw said.

"We went and saw them and said you do your Good Friday appeal, you own Friday night football, why don't we do a Good Friday game and get the ticket contribution towards the appeal and have that as part of that package.

"They were hugely supportive ... I reckon we've done as much as we can with it, it's really a matter of convincing (AFL chief executive) Andrew (Demetriou) that it's the next move that has to happen."

Brayshaw said the club would keep pushing and he believed the league would eventually give in.

"I think it's going to happen sooner rather than later," he said.

"I reckon it will only take rugby league to play two games down here (in Melbourne) involving the Storm where it's the only game played on Good Friday and the AFL will turn around and say we can't have that and they'll wheel it in," he said.

"The key is when they do wheel it in that we're a part of it."
