Riewoldt convincing but questions remain
Nick Riewoldt could hardly have been more convincing in his denials.
He had never met the teenager who posted photos of him naked on her Facebook page, he had never spoken to her; he had had "absolutely no contact" with her.
"I can't understand why someone I don't know would want to denigrate me in this way. I don't know the person," Riewoldt said.
The trouble for Riewoldt is that the photo showing him posing naked alongside St Kilda team-mate Zac Dawson is in the possession of a 17-year-old girl who claims to be the photographer.
As is another shot, taken at much the same time, of another St Kilda player, Nick Dal Santo.
The authenticity of both photos is undenied, they are not candid and can easily be construed as being sexually provocative.
Unfortunately for the St Kilda Football Club, this is just one more scandal - and one that comes a year, almost to the day, after another of the club's players, Andrew Lovett, allegedly raped a woman at a team-mate's flat.
The girl who posted the photo of Riewoldt claimed earlier to be pregnant with twins after having sex with two other St Kilda players.
Police investigated the claim and cleared both players.
In a self-confessed act of revenge against the AFL and the St Kilda club, the girl posted the photos on Facebook, St Kilda obtained a court order for their removal and the girl has promised to put them - and several others - back on the internet by the end of the week.
Riewoldt's explanation given at a media conference on Tuesday addressed almost every aspect of his side of the story.
Notably, it didn't explain his foolishness at allowing such a photo to be taken.
Riewoldt says teammate Sam Gilbert took the photo in a hotel room on a football trip to Miami 12 months ago.
He says he told Gilbert to delete it.
Gilbert not only failed to delete it from his camera, he downloaded it to his laptop computer from which the girl somehow copied it.
For that, Riewoldt is "very annoyed" with Gilbert.
"I'm bitterly disappointed with my team-mate," he said.
It would be no surprise if Riewoldt had given physical expression to his annoyance.
But as of Tuesday morning, he hadn't even discussed with Gilbert a matter which has the potential to tear lives, families and a football club apart.
"I'll wait for him to approach me," he said.
Riewoldt gives every impression of being a good and decent person.
The girl who put the photos on Facebook appears to be sincerely and deeply aggrieved.
At least one of them is not being entirely truthful.
