Alfie Mafi signs on with Force
The Western Force have secured former Waratahs and Brumbies back Alfie Mafi for the 2011 Super Rugby season.
Mafi played nine games over two seasons for the Waratahs before linking up with the Brumbies in 2009, where he notched a further seven appearances.
The 22-year-old has been plagued by injuries during his time in Super ranks, with two broken ankles and a fractured fibula halting his progress.
Mafi has played primarily on the wing through his career, but the Force may groom him to take a role in the centres.
"What we see in Alfie is a player with enormous potential and someone with the desire and focus to realise that talent," Force coach Richard Graham said.
Mafi said his move to the Force would give him a fresh start.
"It's something I think I needed to do, it's a challenge I was really keen to take on and to make the most of," he said.
"I've always enjoyed the way the rugby has been played at the ... Force and I'm really looking forward to the season."
Mafi's arrival offsets the loss of former Wallabies back Scott Staniforth, who was forced to retire last week due to a serious neck injury.
