Force get good practice in the heat
New Zealand recruits Willie Ripia and David Smith made a positive first impression in Western Force colours, helping their side to a 40-24 rugby trial victory over an Australian Barbarians side at TG Millner Field on Saturday.
The Super rugby side scored six tries to four against the collection of fringe Waratahs and Sydney club players.
However, the Barbarians scored three of their tries in the last of the three 20-minute periods of the game.
Winger Smith was among the Force tryscorers and impressed along with another recruited speedster, former Brumbies and Waratahs flyer Alfi (Alfi) Mafi, who also cross the Baa Baas line.
Centre Mitch Inman and each member of the all-Wallabies backrow of Ben McCalman, Matt Hodgson and Richard Brown also crossed the opposition tryline.
Wallabies utility James O'Connor, who started at fullback, kicked four conversions, with Ripia adding another.
Five-eighth Ripia looked comfortable in marshalling the Force backline.
Coach Richard Graham said the hitout had been a good exercise in conditioning for his players, with the temperature up around the 40 degree mark.
The Perth-based franchise were missing a couple of key forwards.
Captain and lock Nathan Sharpe is recovering from hernia surgery, while livewire flanker David Pocock, the Wallabies' outstanding player in 2010, was rested.
In Sharpe's absence, Graham gave a run to giant 204cm lock Phoenix Battye, a 20-year-old who represented Australia at the junior World Cup.
