More signings to come, says Suns CEO
Gold Coast will sign up to four more uncontracted AFL players within the next few weeks and will also enter the bidding war for disgruntled Brisbane Lion Jared Brennan, says Suns CEO Travis Auld.
Brisbane refused to comment on reports that Brennan's manager has asked the club to manufacture a trade for the key position swingman.
The Suns are interested in claiming the 26-year-old to complement the recruiting of Campbell Brown (Hawthorn), Michael Rischitelli (Brisbane), Nathan Bode (Adelaide) and Nathan Krakouer (Port Adelaide).
Auld said there was a ceiling to the number of experienced players they would recruit because they needed to keep room on their list to blood youngsters.
"We've said somewhere between six and eight (uncontracted players)," Auld said on Wednesday.
"If we start going over eight, and this is repeating Scott Clayton's list management strategy, what we'll effectively do is start cutting down opportunities for those young draft picks.
"We've got nine of the first 15 picks this year and we have a bunch of 17-year-olds on our list right now with a lot of talent and access to Queensland and NT kids.
"We need to give them opportunities, but not just to get on the list but to give them games so the ultimate number is six to eight."
Besides Brennan, Gold Coast coach Guy McKenna said out-of-favour Collingwood ruck-forward man Josh Fraser and Melbourne's discarded Queensland-raised key forward Brad Miller were under consideration.
McKenna was also willing to throw former Richmond forward Andrew Krakouer a career life-line after he returned from spending a year in prison for assault to win the WAFL's Sandover Medal.
Krakouer, 27, played 102 games with the Tigers before being delisted in 2007.
"When we set out to get the uncontracted players we wanted the best available talent and the best for our football club," McKenna said.
"Within the rules, we already have that player from Brisbane, but Jared (Brennan) technically speaking is up for trade if he wants out of Brisbane and naturally we'd be a player in that.
"Mature-aged players are part of our list build, not just uncontracted players but players which are off lists.
"Players that haven't been on lists for a while and want to come back, Andrew Krakouer is a name out of WA who has just won the Sandover Medal.
"It's about the best available quality opportunity of costs as well because we have to fit them in the salary cap."
