Wilkinson on form in Toulon romp
England's 2003 World Cup winning fly-half Jonny Wilkinson was in superb form on Saturday as he scored two tries in his 21-point haul in Toulon's 41-10 triumph over promoted Top 14 outfit Agen.
Wilkinson's superb individual display was almost matched by Biarritz's former French international Dimitri Yachvili, who totalled 20 points in their 25-20 home win over Toulouse.
It was a measure of revenge for the hosts after their European Cup final defeat to Toulouse last season, and the defeat leaves the visitors without an away win in their three trips on the road this term.
Toulon got off to an electric start against Agen scoring three tries in the opening 22 minutes with Wilkinson grabbing their first as he popped up on the wing to touch down.
South African backrow forward Dewald Senekal and veteran Argentinian Juan Martin Fernandez-Lobbe added two further tries while Wilkinson converted two and added a penalty as Agen were run ragged.
Wilkinson, who has enjoyed a new lease of life since joining Toulon before last season, unbelievably added a second try shortly before half-time after being set-up by Fernandez-Lobbe.
Toulon added a fifth try in the second-half through on-form New Zealand wing Rudi Wulf and a penalty try two minutes from time.
Toulon's conquerors from last Sunday Brive staged an astonishing comeback to beat Stade Francais 29-27 in Paris coming back from 27-12 with 20 minutes remaining to win thanks to a late try by Ronnie Cooke.
Stade Francais had dominated the first-half scoring two tries with English winger Ollie Phillips crossing and soon afterwards Italian captain Sergio Parisse also touched down.
Stade added a third try shortly after the break through a brilliant individual effort by Argentinian fullback Martin Rodriguez Gurruchaga - who added the conversion.
But then Brive staged their remarkable comeback leaving Stade coach Michael Cheika shaking his head in disbelief.
While the Australian was unable to come up with an explanation Stade winger Julien Arias was fuming.
"It is enraging, we are all disappointed, all of us are angry at ourselves," he said.
"We have to learn lessons from this. We are not disciplined enough. We have been making a hell of a lot of mistakes, it is really our black spot."
Racing-Metro's general manager Pierre Berbizier had ranted about Christophe Berdos the referee for his side's home clash with La Rochelle earlier in the week but he looked a happier man as his side won 43-18.
"I was pleased with our ability to fight till the end, even when things were difficult," said Berbizier.
"We had this capacity to stay in the match in spite of our errors."
Their opponents were handicapped by playing the second-half with just 14 men after fullback Benjamin Dambielle was sent-off for a high tackle on Jerome Fillol.
